Why is a borehole pump in Ruaka more expensive than one in South B?

Depth. The escarpment means a deeper static water level, so the pump has to lift further and needs more capability to do it. Fitting a shallower-duty pump to save money here guarantees an early failure.

Our new Ruaka block already has pressure problems. Is the pipework faulty?

Rarely. Modern PPR installations very seldom fail as pipe. In a new block the culprit is nearly always a control: a pressure vessel that lost its charge, a float switch, or a valve left partly closed at commissioning.

Ruaka has gone from a roadside settlement to a dense apartment district in a decade, and the public infrastructure has not kept pace. The practical consequence is that water here is private: nearly every block runs its own borehole, its own storage and its own pumping.

Deep water

Ruaka and the Ndenderu and Banana areas sit on the Kiambu escarpment, where the static water level is meaningfully deeper than in central Nairobi. Boreholes are deeper, pumps work harder and specification matters more.

The temptation on a tight development budget is to fit a pump rated for shallower duty. It works initially and fails early, and the second pump plus the labour costs more than the correct one would have. We size against the actual water level from the test pumping data rather than against the budget.

New pipework, control faults

The newer blocks, particularly those near Two Rivers, were plumbed in modern PPR and it does not fail. When a two-year-old Ruaka block has a pressure complaint, we go to the controls first: pressure vessel charge, float switches, commissioning valves left part-closed. These are cheap fixes that are frequently misdiagnosed as needing a new pump.

Timing a visit

Ruaka town traffic is genuinely difficult through the middle of the day. For non-emergency work we will suggest an early slot, and we would rather tell you that than sit in it on your time.
